After playing the New York map on Epic, I decided to go back and play a little more on the tutorial map, to see if it was as tricky as I thought, because New York had seemed very easy by comparison. Problem was that since I added Shadow Government, eventually the save broke. So I thought I’d start a brand new game in Chicago instead. I played it up until 17 June 1932, when I left it. Eventually I copied the save over to Steam, and after finally finishing my first game in New York, I thought I’d go back and finish this.
For the longest time I had zero auto-routes. Then, once I bought the game on Steam and was told by others they’re really useful if you use them right, I added routes to pick up money from fronts and gambling houses. When I then went back to finish the game, I had a lot of people to divert from the streets to auto-routes, not to mention getting a lot more trucks and changing some buildings into distribution centers. Once I had done that, though, things went relatively quickly.
Let’s get to it.
Ralph “Bottles” Capone, a Weak/Hardworking/Friendly Italian starting out in Westloop, Chicago, where he was focusing on Protection Rackets.
Named after an older brother of Alphonse “Scarface” Capone, I thought I’d see how he’d do taking over Chicago. It’s from this game I came to pick my CoG server handle on Discord. 😁
Nitkin’s Polish Delicatessen produces 30 Stoneware Crocks and 4 Hops every 2 turns.
The Capone Family
Obviously this Capone family is not the same as the Capone family. It did amuse me that I had a whole bunch of relatives available. I found my brother Giorgio “Barrels” Capone (Quiet/Clumsy/Strong) and hired him. He, too, got to drive around in an armored car.
Unfortunately I didn’t look at further family members until November 1933, when I found another brother, Glenn (Slow/Clumsy), and put him in an armored car for his own safety.
When I looked at the family connections, I discovered that two of my long-standing crew members (one of which was a captain) were a) sisters, and b) our cousins! I also found six other cousins to hire, although arguably it was a bit late at that point. Did I mentioned this was with like 3 turns left of the game? 🥴
The funniest thing was still finding myself neighbors with another Capone outfit – not a coincidence, it was run by my father Giulio Capone!
Family connections (as of November 1933)
Progression 1920-1933
I don’t know when the first screenshot is from, except it’s very early on, as can be seen by the numbers.
My safe house is on the diagonal road, the corner below the turn to the left. My mother Pauline ran the business in the first building I managed to get, Pauline’s Place. It became a Corner Speakeasy. It was a speak for a very long time, until I came across a 5000 ft³ building not too far away some years later, and moved it. It then became a bottling plant, followed by (when I started playing it again on Steam) an expanded improved bootlegger, because I really needed the crocks!
At 33 corners (6 April 2023), unknown date in-game, Bottles is expanding in almost every direction.
Three days IRL later, and we’re still growing.
The next update isn’t until 26 May 1927 (turn #365), where the number of corners had risen to 116. Bottles had 38/43 people, 12 cars, 8/8 trucks, 14 backroom operations and 5 gambling houses.
The territory was spread out in an inconvenient way, but I made it work. I was on good terms with dear ol’ dad.
By 15 November 1928 (turn #442), Capone Junior had started making headway into the Downtown area. Corners still at a sort of modest 153, with a crew of 62/71. Now down to 9 cars, but 26/25 trucks. Eight gambling houses now, even though a couple of them were low on numbers. I had doubled the number of backroom operations to 28, which included five speaks and two truck repair bays. I even had four buildings to spare!
The screenshot from 6 September 1929 doesn’t have a comment to go with it, but I’ve expanded more in the Downtown area, and even tried to open some new fronts on the other side of the other Capones. I eventually closed them down, it was too much of a hassle to try and get to them every month (still no auto-routes at this point). I got them back later.
As of turn #519 in May 1930, The Outfit sat on around $1.3 million, had control over 215 corners, a crew of 87/99, with 8 cars and 40/41 trucks. The vast majority of those trucks were pick-up trucks, because small delivery trucks were few and far between on Epic. (Steam is far more generous with them.)
A snowy winter’s day in Chicago, 13 February 1931, and dear ol’ daddy Capone was no more, courtesy of some of my underlings. His former territory is now in his son’s hands. As it should be. Just ask “Chickie” Invernizzi. 🤌
An interesting thing happened (2 August 2023). As I was trying to take over the territory, suddenly a couple of corners turned red – they belonged to The Capone Outfit, the one that had been eliminated. As they came to their senses, the corners reverted back to neutral and were swiftly taken over.
I didn’t really have a specific goal in mind with this map, but taking over most of it seemed like a good idea. I don’t know when the next screenshot is from in-game (it’s from 6 September 2023), but probably later in 1931 or early 1932. The Sullivan Outfit had been taken care of, and Lincoln Park was now free to move into. I had also sent people around to scout the rest of the map, because why not?
So, when I switched to playing on Steam, 17 June 1932 (turn #629), Bottles’ little empire now stretched to 544 corners. At the time, The Outfit was +10 with the Kellers, +5 with the Randalls and +0 with the Kowalczyks, so I was planning on leaving them alone for the time being. There was still plenty of other space I could move into – barring any awkward corners, of which there are a lot on this map.
Most of this particular save was me really getting to grips with the game. In fact, I started working on this guide while playing it, because I wanted a quick reference to what I needed for building various operations. There’s a learning curve. If I started it again from scratch, there are many things I would do differently. Making sure no operations run at a full production cycle in one turn would be a good starting point …
As the final year of Prohibition dawned, 7 January 1933 (turn #658), and having now used everything I learned from playing this map, and others, and working on this guide (which taught a whole bunch of new things), things were looking rather different then they had been …
Now The Outfit was in control of 603 corners, had a crew of 152/210, with and 72/79 trucks. Money-wise, $2.58 million cash, and a net worth of $3.56 million. Not bad for 31 turns of work, eh? 😆
Most of the not-blue corners left on the map are corners without businesses, or where the only business refuses to open a front. I was still happy to leave the three remaining outfits alone, because I was trying to get more businesses going. But they had other ideas.
The End of Prohibition
The final tally of corners when 9 December 1933 came around was 713 corners, 181/263 crew (of which about half were running auto-routes), with around $3.08 million in cash and a net worth of ca $4.16 million. There’s also 199 spare political influence.

Captains
The problem here is that I played until 1932 on Epic, where I don’t have all the DLC, so for most of the game my captain role options were limited to 3.
Enforcer: 0 Intimidator: 5 Jailbird: 0 | Lookout: 0 Mouthpiece: 2 Closer: 0 | Accountant: 2 Operative: 7 Unassigned: 10 |
At the point I could get other roles I had already explored the whole map, so Lookout was impossible to get. I was trying to get two Enforcers, but they never made the requirements in time.
Crew Deaths
They took out one captain, Bogdanov, but I don’t remember the details.

I would say that one of the things I learned here was which expansions to use, but more importantly, how to upgrade your managers. The output here is so far off ideal, and having productions complete every turn isn’t sustainable. It’s a much better balance to get 220 beer every 4 turns than 137 every 1.

This isn’t used anymore. I had one of each T3 to produce barrels, but rarely kept them stocked up because I had more T3 barrels than I needed – and since I knew I could get more from the railroad (I had two passenger train stations in my territory) and politicians, and I was running out of time, there was no need for these. The whiskey is the only one I haven’t yet converted, but I use it to store T3 barrels. The Vodka Distiller is now a Dance Hall, the Brandy Distiller is a storage expansion used to store bottles for every production line in central Westloop, and the Rum Distiller is a storage expansion for building materials.

I needed more crocks, and I remembered that this worked out pretty nicely in New York. Since I decided to stop the T3 barrel production lines, I put the managers to use elsewhere. It gives them something to do, and I wasn’t fussed about having a manager in these ops anyway. These were all opened in the final year.

I haven’t included which expansions are currently active, only how many. This is because I tend to add and remove them as needed for supply management.
I had to move my first beer brewer out of her op, it was getting too much trying to supply it with crocks every single turn. The last on the list started being built the turn before last.

Yes, 40 spare buildings is a lot. The problem I had is that most of them I got in the final year, and my strategy (when I get to the stage in game where I have at least one of everything already) is to not set up new things until I have a cluster of buildings – that way I can set up e.g. four T1 operations to supply a nearby Corner Speak, for instance. But I didn’t have enough buildings in a cluster to start building, and by the time I did, I wouldn’t have got all the building materials over there by the end of Prohibition anyway, so I left it. If I go back to it, though, I’m sure we could make a decent amount of money.
I also didn’t have as many gambling houses going as I should have (ideally, one in each bribed precinct), so that of course made it harder to gain new buildings in a timely fashion.

I may have left two outfits. Didn’t have enough time left before the end of Prohibition to be able to expand into their territory anyway. If I continue playing I might decide to wipe ’em out, though …
The Larsen Outfit was, for most of the game, The Capone Outfit, run by Bottles’ father, Giorgio. For the most part we were on really good terms, and then they suddenly started getting sore about something, and at that point there was no longer a reason to not make a move.
Territory
Westloop
This is such a big part of the map, it feels as if the part to the right (north) should have its own name? Like, Northloop? I’ve just called both areas Westloop.
Controlled Buildings
The Corner Speak next to the cider op on the left is a 5000 ft³ building.
Downtown/Southloop
Controlled Buildings
Lincoln Park/Goose Island
Controlled Buildings
I currently have no backroom operations in this area at all, only a few gambling joints. I was still getting buildings together. Near the topmost diagonal street, on the left, is a 5000 ft³ building. My Accountant was trying to get it, but the building inspector wouldn’t take bribes, so I had to pay $123.4k to get my Accountant out of jail. Because I was hoping to get that building so I could use it as a speak, I was holding off on doing anything with the others. And, well, here we are. No 5k building and no other ops.
The rest of Chicago
The bits I haven’t decided to take over … yet. 😁
Back of the Yards/Southloop
Will I continue playing this game? I might, yes, once I’ve progressed the other maps more. I want to build operations in Lincoln Park, for instance, and see how much money I can make.
But on the other hand, I could just start it again from scratch and make sure to expand sooner to give myself more time to accrue buildings. Now that I know how to set up routes, where the buildings are, and how to best upgrade managers, and so on.
