Nationality: English

The first Detroit seed I tried using The English Outfit was tricky with how the territory was going, and Canada didn’t seem like it spawned properly, so I got quite disillusioned with it. Someone on Discord shared an English Detroit seed saying the safe house was one corner away from a train station. I thought I’d give that one a try instead – and it was worth it!

The biggest problem I had to overcome was that I had zero people selling neutral alcohol anywhere near me. I needed some in order to unlock the moonshine operation, and I had to unlock that to get the skill to make my own in a distillery. Fortunately I finally looted a hooligan safehouse that turned out to have a really big stack of neutral alcohol! I had enough to hand in to unlock the moonshine op, build it, let it run a cycle, which then meant I could unlock the backroom distillery and have my own supply. As I explored to the western side of the map, I did finally find some businesses that sold it.

I probably couldn’t have kept tabs on this game as well as I did without the use of the Keepin’ Tabs spreadsheet. Feel free to download a copy!

But anyway, let’s see what happened!

Robin “The Sheriff” Hood, a Loner/Irreverent/Strong Englishman starting out in Conner Creek, Detroit, where he was focusing on Protection Rackets.

Playing as English when you live in Nottingham, the name seemed appropriate for playing an outlaw.

Local Snooker & Billiards produces 8 Fruit and 2 Sugar every 4 turns.

The Hood Family

Turns out the Hoods aren’t just good at taking over Detroit by crime, they are also kind of prolific at spreading their DNA, as it turned out. There are a lot of relatives about!

I ended up hiring all the brothers and sisters called Hood (Virginia later seemed to have married a fellow called Henson, but the game doesn’t know anything about him), and toward the end of the game I discovered that at some point, Robin had gotten married and become a father of four – and he even named a daughter Marion! What are the odds?!

Family connections

Progression 1920-1933

The earliest save I have left (dated 10 February 2024) is from 28 May 1924 (end of turn #209). It clocks in at 60 corners, 19/21 crew, 4 cars and 8/6 trucks, with $44758.29 money at hand. It has two gambling houses, a cigarette factory, a corner speakeasy, and produces fruit wine, brick wine, counterfeit wine, hard cider and homemade beer. Which is a lot more than I had accomplished in the original Detroit save, which I ended up deleting at some point.

The first screenshot I shared to Discord (27 April 2024) is from 2 September 1926 (turn #327). The tally was 212 corners, 52/67 crew, 10 cars, 21/20 trucks, ~$207k cash.

It was posted with this comment:

Because of course I left myself the gift of leaving it right in the middle of an election cycle. Fortunately, by mid-July (when I started it back up) I had already sponsored all the politicians covering my territory. Phew!

It seems I started playing, then left it to focus on finishing the Chicago game, and then came back to it to discover I was knee deep into an election cycle.

At some point I think the game glitched, because I had to load a previous save. I don’t know what that’s about. There were a few glitches here and there, most notably how the save wouldn’t load back up after I started building a supper club that could sell Canadian whiskey. I think I lost nine turns in total (6+3) before I figured out the problem.

This happened close to the end of the game:

Fortunately all I had to do was to click on another character or building to get out of the dialogue.

Next time we have a look it’s 6 January 1927, and the Merry Men have taken over the entire east side. 238 corners, 63/75 crew, 12 cars, 27/27 trucks, $312k. A jump of around $100k in three months doesn’t strike me as too bad.

Two years later, 4 January 1929, Hood’s crew have added a further 133 corners (a total of 371), 119/133 crew, 22 cars, 55/73 trucks, and surpassed a million in cash: $1.08M.

I couldn’t fit the whole thing on one image, because the northwest side is in the process of being taken over. At this point there were only two rival outfits left.

Dearborn was still up for grabs. The Sheriff called dibs. A year later, 3 January 1930, the Merry Men had conquered 520 corners, had 137/186 crew, 30 cars, 64/86 trucks, $1.56M.

As of 16 January 1931, we now had 595 corners, 179/228 crew, 36 cars, 75/99 trucks, and $2.04M. Still only an increase of about $500k each year for the past couple of years. There must be something to be done about that.

… Although saying that, I did spend over $529k on the 1930 elections – and won every single political ward – so that might have something to do with it.

There was hardly any difference from the previous image of the same part of the Downtown/Conner Creek/Grosse Pointe/Hamtramck area, so I skipped it. Grandmont-Rosedale is filling up nicely, though:

I wanted to get rid of the Joneses (formerly the Vorobevs), because they were standing between me and total domination of that side of the Detroit River. Annoyingly, it was the outfit across the river (on what looks like Grosse Ile) that started having beef with me instead.

But not for long!

With more territory, I could open more gambling houses. With more gambling houses, more buildings, and with more buildings, you can open more operations.

The Sheriff woke up on New Year’s Day, 1 January 1932, to a healthy $3.34M. Almost a hundred more corners had been added (now 684), and a bunch of new operations opened: 228/270 crew, 41 cars, 95/112 trucks.

I tried very hard to goad the Joneses into attacking me, but to no avail. They were still of a positive opinion of me, despite me smashing up their stuff in a bid to get one of the captains that one arrest he needed to become a Jailbird. He could stand over a crime scene in enemy territory without a bribed cop without anything happening. It was quite annoying.

But eventually I decided I’d had enough because I really wanted the Jones territory, so … I took care of it … in an Al Pacino kind of way.

Those two corners on Grosse Ile annoyed me, but unfortunately the only business on it, the only one that could have expanded to get the corner next to it, had an upright and religious owner. Boo.

As 7 January 1933 dawned, aside from a few remaining hooligans, it’s safe to say Detroit was firmly owned by the Merry Men. At 714 corners, there wasn’t much territory left to take. 267/301 crew, 44 cars, 115/132 trucks, and almost $2M made from last year: $5.148M. 🥂 And that’s not taking into account that I also spent $650k on winning the 1932 election.

My goal ended up being to take out everyone else – unfortunately I didn’t have Favors with the remaining hooligans, so had to take them out instead of asking them to join my crew. Yes, very sad. Anyway.

A second goal was to not let spare buildings just sit there. Not when they could make me even more money – so I went for maximizing everything the last year. Build ALL the things!

And building things, it turned out, meant I learned a few more tips and tricks about the game, and that turned out to be extremely lucrative.

The End of Prohibition

The final tally of corners when 9 December 1933 came around was 721 corners, 306/325 crew (many were running auto-routes), with around $8.02 million in cash ($8,022,393.00) and a net worth of ca $9.88 million. I also had 653 political influence left over.

Crew

20 people on the road, including The Sheriff, of which two were in Canada. There were no unassigned crew, but three were assigned auto-routes that I hadn’t got around to creating yet.

The strange thing from the last few turns was that while I was still on 721 corners, the max amount of crew I could have went up from 318 to 322 to 325. I don’t really know how, as I thought crew number was based on corners – and bar one or two that I might have been able to get (but felt pointless to try) had all the corners I could possibly get.

Captains

I really tried my best to get “Milky” Schwarz arrested so he could become a Jailbird, but alas, he became an Enforcer instead. Next time I’ll have to make sure that if someone gets arrested, work on them to fulfill the other criteria for Jailbird.

I didn’t really do a lot of schemes, come to think of it. Maybe because I lost a crew member trying to rob a bank and thought better of it.

Crew Deaths

They took out three captains in total. I don’t remember the details, only that Walton was trying to rob a bank and it didn’t go so well.

I really should make a note of how and why people die. Must remember that next time. I may have gotten the Vehicles for Victory achievement at the end of this game, but No Applesauce is still proving elusive.

Allies

This would usually be based on how many precincts and wards covered Hood territory, but umm … they all did. So I guess:

The bottom three were still in the process of being built. The one after Fruit Wine was in the process of upgrading to Improved, the one after that just needed pipes to do the upgrade. They were all used as a way of selling surplus to raise more money, plus giving a steady supply of crocks. Except the fruit wine one, because you can’t “improve” that one, sadly.

You can tell which Fine Dining Restaurant used to be a Small Speakeasy before it got upgraded to a Supper Club. Perhaps the better idea is to build a Small Speak and upgrade it rather than building it from scratch. 🤔 The 🍁 indicates the restaurant I turned the Canadian safehouse into! I don’t really know why I gave one of the Dance Hall managers that pointless level in Methodical Organizer.

I even had a warehouse for the sole purpose of storing furniture! I had a bunch of furniture stores, so when I finally got another building over where three of them were, I didn’t hesitate to move everything there.

The safehouse started as a Fruit Wine Operation, then I moved it to another building and let the safehouse become a warehouse to better house any imports from Canada.

I’m quite happy with only being left with five unused buildings, even if some were still in the process of being constructed by the end of the game.

The final turn the net profit from all of them combined was $2756.42, which is … better than the turn before (-$3,139.23), when I gave a bunch of credit extensions and had people take their money and leave.

I did do a lot of credit extensions, in fairness. It felt appropriate considering the boss’s name is Robin Hood …

Could I have got more money out of the gambling houses? Absolutely, but I mostly just run them to get buildings instead of hoping to get lots of money from them … and they were very good at giving me buildings. Including the safehouse and the building in Canada, I managed to get 155 buildings.

Problem is that if I go back through older saves, the names are different – and for the ones that remain as unknown location, they haven’t yet hired the person that was killed last, so I can’t look through their member lists for clues.

tl;dr: There were seven of them. They’re all sleepin’ with the fishes.

Territory

There were two freight train stations (Conner Creek, Dearborn) and a passenger train station (Hamtramck). There’s even a freight train train station in Canada, but I couldn’t interact with it since it’s not within my territory.

Conner Creek

Controlled Buildings

Home of the first group of T1+T2 operations.

The Hood safehouse is the warehouse to the left of the brick wine op, slightly to the right of middle. The train station is on the same corner as the brick wine op.

Grosse Pointe/northeast

Controlled Buildings

Home of the second group of T2 operations, fourth of T1.

Second (right) and fifth (left) group T1, and three of the spare buildings (top left):

The icon hiding behind the bootlegging operation is a corner speakeasy.

Downtown/Hamtramck/Highland Park

Controlled Buildings

Third group of T1 operations. The furniture-only warehouse is bottom right.

Here are the other two spare buildings – the one on the left isn’t a supper club.

Dearborn/Grosse Ile

Controlled Buildings

Fourth group T2, using T1 crocks for production.

Seventh group of T1:

Sixth group of T2:

Grosse Ile:

Grandmont-Rosedale

Controlled Buildings

Group six for T1, group three for T2.

Fifth group of T2, also running on T1 crocks:

Well, you can’t have territory there as such, but I had a nice Fine Dining Restaurant. You can read more about that on the Canada page, but here’s how it looked at the end:

(Apparently my mother is Italian, but why is she in Canada?!)

I left three hooligans that I didn’t have Favors with, because the best weapon I could get was a crowbar and didn’t fancy my chances. The one furthest to the right I actually did still have Favors with, but he was occasionally offering to smuggle things across the river for only $250, so I kept him around.

Will I continue playing this game? Nope, that’s it. I’d rather move on to one of the other games I’ve got going. I still have five more achievements to get!

Oh, and it gets kinda slow to load and do anything at the end of the game, which also means I’m glad to move onto something that’s at least a bit quicker for the time being.
