Examples of auto routes

All routes work off a garage being nearby on the route, not necessarily one of my own, but one that is most conveniently placed. Even trucks that only distribute supplies and goods carry some money so they can afford to repair the trucks when needed. They tend to use “pick up until X” so they don’t end up hoarding money.

Gambling

This route makes sure that a number of different gambling houses have enough money to operate, plus moves any excess to the safe house to keep that topped up.

This is the longest of three auto routes in New York that ensure my gambling operations are topped up. The other two are currently 11 and 9 steps respectively. The driver is in a two-door passenger car, carrying a billy club for protection just in case.

The line on the left hand side is the speakeasy (top) and the repair bay (bottom). The point on the right of the speakeasy is the safe house.

Fronts

This is one of 14 auto routes in New York that collect form or support my fronts. The one with the least amount of stops currently has 12, the longest 26. The driver is in a two-door passenger car, carrying a billy club for protection just in case.

  13. Schmidt Storage (Upgraded Truck Repair Bay)

The first stops on the route won’t need topping up, but carrying $100 at the start of it means that there’s some spare just in case. The truck repair bay is the point furthest to the right on the map.

Fronts with bottle returns

For this one we’re going to Detroit, where I decided to collect on bottle returns at the same time as picking up money from the fronts, because since you don’t put the bottles in the car anyway, it made sense to combine them – and not every front is a return rack. Driver’s in a two-door passenger car with a billy club. There are currently five fronts routes, but only two of them have fronts with return racks … for now.

  17. Local Snooker & Billiards (safe house)

I don’t currently have a distribution set up for the small bottles (I’ve only recently had enough buildings to get more T2 operations going), but the safe house is an Improved Fruit Wine Operation, which uses small bottles.

Bottle returns

You can, of course, also have front collections and bottle return collection routes be completely separate. This one’s in Philadelphia, a little two-door passenger car that drives around and tells fronts to drop the returned bottles back to the safe house.

The real reason why this route is completely separate is because I originally thought it required picking the bottles up in your vehicle, and didn’t want a front collector getting delayed from having to distribute bottles. Then I discovered that wasn’t the case, and had to re-think the whole thing, resulting in this route.

Because all bottle returns on this route automatically get delivered to the safe house, there’s also distribution route (scroll down).

Buying

This is one of four auto routes in Chicago that goes around buying crocks to supply four improved T1 operations. The driver is in a small delivery truck, but carries no weapon so they can carry the maximum amount of goods.

  15. Chrysanthemum Coffee & Tea Shop
Buy: Stoneware Crocks, as much as possible
  16. Lawrence’s Snack Spot (Improved Backroom Distillery)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, as much as possible

As you can see, the driver drops off crocks twice on this route to maximise number of crocks it can buy. If the truck fills up straight away, there’s a chance for it to drop off and on the next turn get to the ones further down the list before dropping the next batch off. The crocks are dropped in a distillery that doesn’t operate all the time, but is in a convenient spot for distributing the crocks to the four T1 alcohol operations nearby.

Buying and distributing

“Can you not buy and drop off at the same time?” Oh, absolutely! Welcome to Detroit, where a small delivery truck is doing exactly that.

  23. Thomas’s Corner (Improved Home Brew Operation)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, as much as possible

This route doesn’t currently include a Moonshine Operation, because I have only just got the Moonshine op online – for a very long time there was a severe neutral alcohol supply issue! It also runs the risk of overstocking the operations, so I will change this route to drop off the crocks to a central distribution point instead – see below.

Distribution

Having separate routes for buying and distributing means you can pause either one if you need to, so it gives you a bit more control. It also means you could technically focus someone on only buying (e.g.) bottles, and have a really long route with several drop-offs.

Supplies to operations

This is one of currently two (?!) auto routes in Chicago that distributes crocks to supply four improved T1 operations. The driver is in a small delivery truck, but carries no weapon so they can carry the maximum amount of goods.

  1. Else’s Coffee & Tea Store (Corner Speakeasy)

  2. Lawrence’s Snack Spot (Improved Backroom Distillery)

  3. Associated Stations, Inc. (Improved Cider Operation)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, until location has 256 crocks
  4. Brigitte’s Cafeteria (Improved Moonshine Operation)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, until location has 160 crocks
  5. Atlas Scrapyard
    Repair your vehicle
  6. Samuel’s Lumber Co. (Improved Backroom Wine Operation)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, until location has 256 crocks
  7. Dietrich Warehouse & Storage (Improved Home Brew Operation)
Drop off: Stoneware Crocks, until location has 320 crocks

This route distributes the crocks bought in the buying route example. It used to be drop off X quantity of crocks, but because the route is so short it meant that the operations got so overstocked I had to temporarily stop it and manually remove some crocks back to storage so the operations could run.

The topic of how to best distribute things came up on Discord and it was suggested having the drop off be “until location has X” instead, which prevents the operations overstocking, so I’ve changed all drop-offs to supply up to a maximum of four production cycles worth of crocks. Even if that means the driver has to run on empty for a few runs, that’s fine, because at least I don’t have to worry about it.

Distributing supplies from return racks

This works exactly the same as above, but this particular route for a pickup truck in Pittsburgh is picking up and dropping off at a deliberately slower pace because there’s not a lot of places to drop them off and I didn’t want the safe house to run out of small bottles too quickly, or risk overstocking the operations.

Drop off: Small Bottles, up to 20 cases
  10. Pittsburgh Nickel Metal Co. (Upgraded Truck Repair Bay)

Is this the most efficient way of distributing small bottles from a return rack? Probably not, no, but I was new to both return racks and supply drop routes when I set this up.

Keeping speakeasies stocked up

This is one of currently two auto routes in Chicago that distributes T3 bottles to supply four Supper Clubs and higher. The driver is in a small delivery truck, but carries no weapon so they can carry the maximum amount of goods.

  18. Great Southern Junkyard (Jazz Club)
Drop off: Bottled Whiskey, as much as possible

This route relies on T3 bottles manually being moved from the nearby bottling plant (it’s on the corner above the point on the right) to a distribution point. From there, it picks up the maximum number of bottles it can, equal number of all four, and drops it off at the Dance Hall (left, bottom). Then it goes back and picks up the same thing again and drops them at the Jazz Club (bottom).

T2 and T4 are currently not included in the restocking, but will be added in the future.

Selling goods

I don’t currently have any of these, because all my booze tends to get sold in speaks, and there are a limited number of other things you can sell to businesses.
