The Boss

“Is this what it means to be in charge? People shooting at you?”

Not only do you need to select a nationality for your boss, you also need to select a personality, and a starting skill. The skill can have a surprisingly big impact on the game, so choose wisely.

Starting personalities

For what the individual traits mean, see Traits.

  1. The Driver: Sharpeyed, Careless, Curious
  2. The Brawler: Strong, Agile, Ugly
  3. The Gossip: Talkative, Sociable, Careless
  4. The Iron Fist: Cruel, Aggressive, Irritable
  5. The Bookworm: Intelligent, Hardworking, Myopic
  6. The Churchgoer: Religious, Upright, Friendly
  7. The Calm Center: Confident, Lazy, Forgiving
  8. The Tyrant: Organized, Intelligent, Unkind
  9. The Tough: Slow, Strong, Confident
  10. The Delicate Flower: Weak, Hardworking, Friendly
  11. The Loner: Loner, Irreverent, Strong
  12. The Pushover: Attractive, Slow, Tall
  13. The Underestimated: Ugly, Short, Intelligent
  14. The Torpedo: Immoral, Vindictive, Agile

Anything that has Lazy will start you on 2 AP instead of 3, which makes it difficult to get going because you’re so limited in what you can do each turn. Note that any crew member with the Weak trait take longer to heal up if they get injured. This is a problem if your only crew member is your boss, because you’re stuck pressing “Next turn” until they’re done healing up. (You can abort a Recuperation, but then your boss is still injured.)

Starting skills

  1. Getting Territorial: -10% cash cost for new fronts, decreases time required for a front to gain control of an adjacent corner.
  2. Hooligan Respect: Reduces cash required to buy out a Corner Hooligan and cash they’ll ask in return for offers, increases likelihood of complying with your demands.
  3. Natural Mechanic: +1 truck slot, -20% vehicle repair cost, reduce wear and tear by regular driving.
  4. Nice Building You’ve Got There: -20% cost for new building, increases manager XP per turn, reduced heat generated by operations in your controlled buildings.
  5. Organizing Crime: Increased relationship boost when meeting business owners of same ethnicity, increase relationship improvement from trading, allows +1 active mission.
  6. Protection Rackets: -10% business owner displeasure from protection demands, increases amount of protection money paid by each business extorted, decreases amount of time they’re upset about it.
  7. Respect for the Law: -10% cop bribe cost, +60 days bribe duration, reduces likelihood of police raids.
  8. Street Brawler: Improves melee weapon skills by increasing damage and chance of landing a blow.

If you have a specific nationality DLC and play as that nationality, you will also have one or two automatic background traits:

The German Outfit

Brewery Lover: Turns out, the German peoples’ effusive love for beer is such that you can command higher prices when selling it. (+30% on all types of beer!)

German Efficiency: Use your knowledge of systems and a culture of dedication to lower build times and build costs when setting up a new operation. (-$9%, -1 turn. Applies to all backroom operations.)

The Italian Outfit

Enhanced Persuasion: A true Italian mobster doesn’t need to care so much what people think of them, allowing you to do business uninterrupted at much lower relationship levels than usual. (The difference is noticeable. An Italian can usually still buy from businesses with a minor negative relationship. Not Italian? They “don’t do business with the likes of you” and you have to wait for their negativity to start wearing off.)

The Polish Outfit

Patriotic Speaker: A shared interest in the uplifting of the Polish people makes it possible for you to ask for greater discounts or price hikes at no relationship cost. (TBC)

Spirited Palate: Genuine, long-standing Polish appreciation of distilled drinks helps your outfit command a small markup when selling spirits. (+10% on Moonshine, all T3, and most T4 (not including Cordial).)

The office: Your personal trophy cabinet

The Criminal Record DLC introduces something that’s classed as an office for your boss. This is not a location on the map, or a building you can use and assign your boss to, but is a sort of in-game trophy cabinet, or a “visual record of your achievements” that you fill with mementos. New items get added to it automatically when you’ve achieved certain things in game.

If you want to get to it when you don’t have a start-of-turn notification, you find it on the “Your Outfit” screen under Report dialogs (top left of the screen, third icon from the left).

“You show up well dressed with a silk cravat and a bold proposal. A year ago, you were a brigand in the woods. Who are you?”

You can either choose a swanky penthouse overlooking the city or a more cozy country lodge style.

Here are two examples:

(New York, February 1931)

(Atlantic City, January 1926)

If you add Criminal Record after you’ve started playing, you shouldn’t have a problem. You should still get pop up that asks which style of office you want and then start to fill it up with things.
